Second-generation femtosecond laser Since the invention of flash photography in the 19th century, short-pulse light has been used as a means of freezing fast-moving events. The invention of the pulsed laser in 1960 allowed researchers to learn more about the many processes that occur on nanosecond and picosecond time scales. Many events in nature occur on faster time scales, thus facilitating ultra-short pulse lasers.
