This disease is most infectious in blister formation, but the virus persists in saliva or genital secretions for days or weeks. Primary oral and facial infections occur in more than 50% of unicellular vesicles in children, often unnoticed, but occasionally causing severe herpetic gingivostomatitis. Genital herpes is usually not necessarily caused by sexual relations and has become a more common disease in developing countries.
