四、吃茶去(赵州茶)“吃茶去”,为禅林法语,出自唐代高僧从谂禅师之口.从谂(公元778～897年),本姓郝,青州临淄(今山东淄博)人,一说曹州(今山东曹县西北)人,自幼出家,为池阳南泉山普愿禅师法嗣,属清源系,居赵州(今河北赵县)观音院,人称“赵州古佛”,又称“赵州禅师”.卒谥“真际禅师”.从谂崇茶、爱茶,主张“任运随缘,不涉言路”.有学人问:“如何是赵州一句”,其曰:“老僧半句也无”,惟认为吃茶能悟性,能消除学人的妄想.未普济《五灯会元》载:“有僧到赵州,从谂禅师问:‘新近曾到此间么?’曰:曾到.’师曰:‘吃茶去.’又问僧,僧曰:‘不曾到.’师曰:‘吃茶去.’后院主问曰:‘为甚么曾到也云吃茶去,不曾到也云吃茶去?’师召院主,主应喏,师曰:‘吃茶去.’”赵州禅师的三云“吃茶去”,其意就在消除人的妄想,打消人的杂念.为此,清湛愚老人《心灯录》载:“赵州‘吃茶去’三字,真直截,真痛快.”清杨焯《游弁山资福寺呈霞胤师》诗曰:“赵州茶熟人人醉,卧听空林木叶飞.”
