棉铃虫有强烈的趋嫩性，卵散产，８０％以上的卵产于玉米尚未开花的雄穗上。胶东地区秋玉米抽雄盛期，是第三代棉铃虫产卵盛期，而开花盛期，则是卵孵化盛期。多年观察结果表明，第三代棉铃虫在秋玉米上的卵量（ｙ）与第二代蛾量（ｘ）密切相关，其相关式为ｙ＝－３１５．９＋１．７７８３ｘ。第三代棉铃虫幼虫量（ｙ）与第二代蛾量（ｘ）相关式为ｙ＝－３１．３＋０．１３４０ｘ，第三代棉铃虫幼虫量（ｙ）与第三代卵量（ｘ）相关式为ｙ＝２．４２＋０．０９８９ｘ。
