伊朗古称波斯,汉代又称安息。公元前一世纪到公元二世纪,曾是罗马与中国贸易、交通(丝绸之路)必经之地。据《史记·大宛传》记载:西汉张骞曾派副使访问安息,安息王令将出动二万骑到边境迎接。随后,安息又派使者来中国,赠送礼品大鸟(驼鸟)卵,带来黎轩(今地中海东部)善眩人(杂技表演者)。东汉和帝时,班超出使西域,派甘英往大秦(罗马帝国)于公元97年到达安息。公元124年班超的儿子班勇出使西域,又到过安息的西部。安息王子安世高也曾来中国,据《高僧传》卷一记载:从148年到169年的二十多年中,他在洛阳将三十多部佛经译成汉文。
