According to recent reports by Nature Week, an overseas team of scientists will be invited for the first time to help evaluate the outstanding research done at the university. This is the news released by the British Higher Education Commission recently. This measure is one of several reforms scheduled for the RAE, a periodic program designed to assess the quality of university research. The next round of RAE will be carried out in April 2001. “Science is an international activity,” said Barram Bekladonia, policy director for the Higher Education Grants Committee (HEFCE) in England. Now - he added - points out that the funding committee will have the opportunity to put the British study on the international balance for measurement. Under this reform program, RAE's 60 thematic areas of experts will select a “virtual” group of overseas scientists. Overseas Scientists Panelists will not actually meet but will review all the research findings that the panel of UK experts deems worthy of the highest grade.
