The short story of a woman writer Kate Chopin, “A pair of stockings,” depicts the process in which the heroine, Mrs. San Moth, briefly departs from the housewife’s complicated chores and seeks to satisfy her own desires and eventually returns to the position of the housewife. Her brief awakening eventually became a bubble with its social inevitability. There are three reasons for this: First, the family is all about the worth of Mrs. Samos. She is a competent mother, dedicated to children and good at family, the family is her only ownership. Second, in the patriarchal society, men dominate economic power, especially in Louisiana, where the law clearly stipulates that women are the legitimate property of men. There is no right to speak without economic status. Finally, what Mrs. Samos pursued was nothing more than the elegant life of the upper classes. In fact, the life of the ladies and wives was essentially men’s. Only when women participate in social production like men and obtain economic independence can women truly improve their social status.
