现存多篇对于稗治文的研究中,多以其在华活动为线索推进。少数以人物本身为线索推进的研究中,如《美国来华传教士第一人》《稗治文:鸦片战争的舆论鼓噪者》等,均以单面身份认知稗治文。而历史中的稗治文是一个全能、多面式的人物,故本文将通过研究稗治文的多面身份,力图还原一个真实的稗治文。本文将通过中、美不同视角研究稗治文在来华前后不同时期、中国的不同地点、中美冲突时代背景下的多面身份。本文认为,稗治文是一个以西方价值体系为根本,兼受东方价值观念影响的复杂、矛盾、多面的时代人物。 Many of the existing studies on the treatment of barnyard grass are mostly clues to their activities in China.
