Fresnoite Ba2TiSi2O8 have attracted much attention because it reveals good dielectric and optical features. In this work, Ba2TiSi2O8 glass-ceramics were prepared by sol-gel process using Ba(OH)28H2O,Ti(OC4H9)4 and Si(OC2H5)4 as raw materials. The reaction mechanism of the formation of Ba2TiSi2O8 are investigated in detail by XRD, DSC, IR.Obviously as seen from the XRD patterns (Fig.1), the precursor powders annealed below 600 ℃ still maintains in the amorphous state, and no phase transformation has occurred. But for the precursor powders annealed at 700 ℃, some diffraction peaks occur, which could be assigned to Ba2TiSi2O8 phase. This indicates that the sol-gel process could decrease the crystallization temperature of Ba2TiSi2O8 to about 700℃, much lower than that reported by Popovici. The FT-IR peaks (Fig.2),corresponding to Ba2TiSi2O8 crystallization appear for heat treatment conditions at 700 ℃ and above, which were identified given analogous indication for the crystalline state of the synthesized materials. The Avrami index and the activation energy obtained by the non-isothermal DSC as shown in Fig.3, Fig.4, and Fig.5, respectively. The Avrami coefficient n and the activation energy of crystallization E were to be 3.87 and 1177 kJ/mol, respectively.
