Prince Charles got married to his 30 years’ love Camilla Parker Bowles. In order to make it seem more like an ordinary wed-ding, Charles and Camilla made their honeymoon in the cozy1 Scot-tish royal villa2 in the countryside.
After his big wedding with Diana in those earlier days, he cruised around the Mediterranean with her and they had their honey-moon on the royal yacht3 “Brittania” for three weeks. And now, Charles’ honeymoon with Camilla Parker Bowles will be at Birkhall.
This royal villa with a modest scale and grey-white walls, was built in the early 18th century. It is in a small wood which is 12 miles from Balmoral Castle in northeastern Scotland. In the 19th century, Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband, bought it. After that, Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth II’s mother, lived there for a long time. It is the very place that Queen ElizabethⅡspent her honeymoon with her hus-band, Prince Philip. After that, it became the summer retreat4 for the Queen. In 2002, the Queen Mother passed away and the villa was in-herited5by Charles.
In those days, Charles spent his honeymoon with Princess Diana here after their trip around the Mediterranean. Different from Camilla, faced Charles’s cherished place, Princess Diana had no interest in Scotland country life. Charles has described the early 18th-century home as “a unique haven of coziness and character”. Charles, howev-er, often retreated to Birkhall to escape media scrutiny6 during the breakdown of his first marriage. In recent years, he and Parker Bowles have spent much of the spring season there. He is always fishing by himself in the River Muick, which flows at the bottom of Birkhall’s sloping garden.
