F. Scott Fitzgerald once observed “there are no second acts in America.” Although that may have been true in 1925, the rule no longer applies in this day and age. These days, celebrities reinvent(彻底改造) themselves on nearly an hourly basis, effortlessly segueing(继续) from one remarkably successful career to the next. Stay tuned as I present 3 of my very favorite second acts.
Justin Timberlake / 贾斯汀·汀布莱克
Former profession: Boy band member
Current profession: Actor
Is there anything Justin Timberlake can’t do? The multiple Grammy Award(格莱美奖)winning artist has recorded so many hits. A decade after becoming a pop star, this Memphis(孟斐斯,美国田纳西州一城市) native has finally distanced himself from ’N Sync(超级男孩,美国著名男孩团体,现已解散) thanks to his flourishing film career. In the past couple of years, JT has starred in Edison(《埃迪森》,2005年上映的美国惊悚片) and Alpha Dog(《阿尔法狗》,2007年1月上映的美国犯罪剧情片), and he’s about to pump up the volume even higher in Black Snake Moan(《黑蛇呻吟》,2007年2月上映的美国爱情片).
“As time goes by, people will see who I am for who I am,” he confidently asserts.
Dan Brown / 丹·布朗
Former profession: Teacher
Current profession: Best-selling author
A former English and Spanish teacher, Brown’s life changed forever in the late 1980s when he met Blythe Newlon(布莱丝·纽顿, 女画家,布朗的妻子), an illustrator who encouraged him to pursue his dreams of becoming a writer. Together, the happy couple wrote the humorous books 187 Men to Avoid: A Survival Guide for the Romantically Frustrated Woman(《187种该躲开的男人:给情场失意女的指南》) in 1995 and The Bald Book in 1998.
Four novels later, Brown finally achieved his major breakthrough in 2003 with the release of The Da Vinci Code(《达·芬奇密码》). The international smash hit has since sold over 60.5 million copies and has been translated into 44 languages. “This life is what I always wanted,” Brown says. “I had a vision of our happiness.”
Will Smith / 威尔·史密斯
Former profession: Rapper(饶舌说唱歌手)
Current profession: Actor
Now this is the story all about how a young rapper’s life got flipped, turned upside down(完全颠倒). Philly(费城,美国一城市) native Will Smith went from being a promising young Master of Ceremonies (节目主持人) to a television superstar in 1990. He appeared in a string of blockbuster(一鸣惊人的) films, including Bad Boys(《绝地战警》, 1995); Independence Day(《独立日》, 1996); Men in Black(《黑衣人》, 1997); and Ali(《拳王阿里》,2001) for which Smith was nominated for an Academy Award(奥斯卡金像奖).
“It’s a whole different thing, being an actor,” he says. “A rapper is about being completely true to yourself. Being an actor is about changing who you are. You make yourself a different person. You become a different person.”
