Brash young dandies, prosperous middle-aged artists, introspective1 old menÑall of them stare mesmerisingly2 out of Rembrandt’s self-portraits. There are nearly 90 of themÑsome 50 oil paintings, 30 etchings3 and ten drawingsÑmaking up no less than ten per cent of this artist’s huge output. With the possible exception of one or two oddball4 painters who never did anything else, he is the most prolific self-portraitist ever.
Rembrandt, born Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn in Leiden, Holland, in 1606, executed5 an average of two self-portraits annually during his most creative working years.
A brilliant painter, the greatest of his age, he was also, from the start, an ambitious one. Even as a young artist he signed himself with just his first name, deliberately6 placing himself in the same league as Leonardo, Titian, Raphael and Michelangelo.
In 1631, at the age of 25, Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam, one of the great art capitals of the day. He lodged with an art dealer, Hendrick van Uylenburgh, and in 1634 married Hendrick’s cousin, Saskia. She died in 1642, leaving Rembrandt with a son, Titus.
Despite his success as an artist during this time, Rembrandt gradually drifted into financial chaos. He bought too many paintings and etchings at high prices for his own extensive art collection. He also speculated unwisely, as well as spending a fortune on fabrics, elaborate costumes and ornaments worn by his models, including himself. This extravagance7 landed him in the bankruptcy court, after which Rembrandt handed over his business to Hendrick and Titus, effectively becoming their employee.
What led the painter to create this obsessive8 study of himself over some 40 years. Was it vanity? Was it the lack of models? Was it the love of role-playing? While this remains the most compelling9 puzzle about the painter, his self-depictions10 reveal much about his life, times and, most fascinating of all, his character.
