On any given Sunday, right across America, little girls 1)primp and 2)preen. Pose and 3)pout. At beauty 4)pageants like this one, thousands of tiny princesses are paraded by their doting mums and dads. Some can barely walk or talk, but in the 5)rarified world of toddlers and 6)tiaras, the dream starts early.
It’s big business. There’s money to win and a shot at stardom. But, according to Andrea McClaws, who has organised pageants for 25 years, in the States, this is just another family activity.
Andrea: You know, you have your baseball, you have your soccer mums then you have your pageant mums, so we all kind of hang together and it’s just a great hobby.
Robin (Parent): ..and then you turn like this, right? And then you look back and go...
But for pageant mums, it’s a hobby they take to heart. Just ask Robin Dubois and her 7-year-old daughter, Sofia, or Amelia Arraguin and 5-year-old Brooklyn.
Amelia: ..and you’re going like this. And you do your 7)passés. Why are you crying?
Brooklyn: I don’t want to do it.
Amelia: Oh, my gosh. You don’t want to smile?
As we discovered, behind those pageant smiles are more than a few tears and 8)tantrums. It can be a stressful couple of days before showtime.
Over at the Arraguin household, not even a pageant professional like Andrea McClaws can coach a smile out of young Brooklyn.
Andrea: When you get up on that stage, I want you to smile, smile, smile ’cause I’ll be out there watching you.
Amelia: Can I see your pageant smile, babe?
  Brooklyn: Nope.
And this is what our young ladies are aspiring to. Eden Wood is the reigning princess of the pageant scene in America. Beneath the 9)fluttering eyelashes and all those feathers is a 5-year-old girl—a pint-sized superstar who, between shows, signs autographs for her fans. She’s been winning pageants since she was just 18 months old.
Mickie Wood (Eden’s parent): She’s quite the little celebrity.
Managing Eden has become almost a full-time job for mum Mickie Wood. If Eden’s not competing, she’s rehearsing. But perfection doesn’t come cheaply.
Mickie: You wink at them, like, sassy, right? And flirt.
There’s hours of professional coaching. A lot of hair, a lot of make-up, and that showgirl wardrobe.
Today, we’re in Orange County, and the pressure is really mounting, and some little girls find it all too much. For Sofia and Brooklyn, it’s the moment of truth.
MC: Sofia is seven years old from Simi Valley. And she has brown hair and brown eyes...
On stage, Sofia certainly knows what to do—the transformation is dramatic. Brooklyn doesn’t quite manage a smile, but she does get her steps right.
MC: The overall grand supreme winner, ladies and gentlemen, goes to Sofia Dubois!
And Sofia not only won all her categories, she 10)scooped the day with the grand title and a handful of fifties—$1,000.
Reporter: Do you think you’re gonna do a few more of these pageants now?
  Sofia: Every single one.
  Reporter: You’ll be very successful.
  Sofia: Smell the money.
  Robin: I smell it.
  Reporter: Smell the money.
But, for every winner, there’s a loser, and that’s tough when you’re being told you’re not the prettiest young girl in the room.
Reporter: What about the kids who lose?
Andrea: Yeah, I suppose it’s just like team sports. You have to teach your child to win and lose, and it’s just like a life lesson. In anything that we do, you know, you’re gonna win some and lose some.

Host: It’s daylight saving time, and if you

Chapter 8Rice Padd
