Argentina’s capital, 1)Buenos Aires, has long been known for its 2)sultry tango, and now the dance is bringing in a lot of money. Busloads of tourists arrive at tango show houses each night to catch a performance. The Carlos Gardel Corner Theatre is a popular draw.
Visitors fill the theatre’s 500 seats every night. The theatre’s owner, Juan Fabbri, is now opening a new 1,200-seat establishment.
Juan (via translator): We only close one day a year, on the 24th of December on Christmas Eve. We are open 364 days a year and on 364 days a year it is exactly like you can see now, absolutely full. Some days we do two shows, and sometimes we get up to three shows.
The growth of tango dinner theatres comes after the boom in Argentina’s tourism industry, after an economic crisis in 2002 made it cheaper to travel to Argentina. The dinner theatres 3)cater almost exclusively to tourists from Asia, Europe, and all over the Americas.
Many want to learn the dance as well. Last year a record of close to 400,000 foreigners and Argentines attended annual tango events in Buenos Aires. And with an increasing number of cruise ships docking at the capital, that number is expected to grow.
