A young man, a student in one of our universities, was one day taking a walk with a professor, who was commonly called the student’s friend, from his kindness to those who waited on his instructions.
As they went along, they saw lying in the path a coat and a pair of old shoes, which they supposed to belong to a poor man who was employed in a field close by, and who had nearly finished his day’s work.
The student turned to the professor, saying, “Let us play a trick on the man—we will hide his shoes, and hide ourselves behind those bushes, and wait to see his perplexity1 when he cannot find them.”
“My young friend,” answered the professor, “we should never amuse ourselves at the expense of the poor. But you are rich, and may give yourself a much greater pleasure by means of this poor man. Put a coin in each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves and watch how this affects him.”
The student did so and they both placed themselves behind the bushes close by. The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes. While putting on his coat he slipped his foot into one of his shoes, but feeling something hard, he stooped down to feel what it was, and found the coin.
Astonishment and wonder were seen upon his face. He gazed upon the coin, turned it around, and looked at it again and again. He then looked around, but no person was to be seen. He now put the money into his pocket, and proceeded to put on the other shoe; but his surprise was doubled on finding the other coin. His feelings overcame him; he fell upon his knees, looked up to heaven and uttered aloud a fervent2 thanksgiving in which he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, and his children without bread, whom this timely bounty3, from some unknown hand, would save from perishing.
The student stood there deeply affected, and his eyes filled with tears. “Now,” said the professor, “aren’t you much better pleased than if you had played your intended trick?” The youth replied, “You have taught me a lesson which I will never forget. I feel now the truth of these words, which I never understood before—It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

学生照办了，随后两人在附近的灌木丛后藏了起来。穷人很快干完了活，穿过田地，走到小路上放鞋子和外套的地方。当他穿上外套，把脚伸进一只鞋里时，他觉得有什么东西硬邦邦的。他俯身摸了摸，发现了一枚硬币。
他脸上现出惊奇的表情。他盯着硬币，把它翻来覆去地看了又看，接着四处张望，可是什么人也没看到。于是，他把钱放进了口袋，开始穿另一只鞋。当他发现另一枚硬币时，他的惊讶也加倍了。他激动地跪下来，仰望苍天，大声说出一连串热切的感激话。他提到自己那患病又无助的老婆，没有面包吃的孩子们，还说这份从天而降的及时的施舍，救了孩子们的命。
学生站在那里，被深深地感动了，眼里噙满了泪水。教授说：“现在，你不是比捉弄别人得到了更多的快乐吗？”年轻人答道：“您给我上了一堂永远难忘的课。直到今天我才懂得了这句话的真正含义——施比受有福。”
