In 1956, sixteen-year-old John Lennon formed his first band The Quarrymenwith the addition of Paul McCartney and George Harrison and, later its name was changed into the Beatles in 1960, before Ringo Starr joined them in 1962 to form the Beatles we know today. The word beatles came from both beetles and beat. Beetle is an insect like Buddy Holly’s Crickets, beat means The Beat Generation.
As the vocalist1, guitarist and composer2, John Lennon played a critical3 role in the band. At age five, Lennon was sent to live with his aunt Mimi after his parents separated. Mimi ran a very strict household. Lennon very quickly became bored at school, preferring drawing and writing about his classmates and teachers to his studies. Rebellious at an early age, he had a very rough school history, going AWOL (absent without leave4) from classes and petty5 stealing. His future looked bleak until Mimi got a letter of recommendation for Lennon to Liverpool Art College, because of his drawings.
It was at Liverpool Art College, in 1956, that a friend played him Elvis’ Heartbreak Hotel, and Lennon ’s musical interest was piqued6. Then he heard Lonnie Donegan’s Rock Island Line on Radio Luxembourg, and became part of the new Skiffle craze by begging his Aunt Mimi until she broke down and bought him a guitar, although she forever told him he would never get anywhere with it. He had already learned to play the harmonica7 during his childhood, and he taught himself the guitar by applying banjo8 chords that his mother had taught him. Soon he set up his first band.
Having experienced the horror of World War II as a child and then living through the Vietnam era as a young man, Lennon came to embrace9 and embody10 pacifism11. He was the voice and vision that powered such Beatles classics as “All You Need Is Love” and “Strawberry Fields Forever.” Lennon didn’t invent rock and roll, but he did more than anyone else to move it forward and instill it with a conscience. It is said, as the most daring and outspoken of the four Beatles, he helped shape the agenda of the Sixties—socially and politically, no less than musically.
The group disbanded in 1970, after the release of their final album, Let It Be. In the years that followed, each Beatle went on with their respective12 solo careers. In 1975, Lennon dropped out of sight for five years. His eventual return to the recording scene in 1980 was one of the more eagerly anticipated musical events of the year. However, on December 8, within weeks of his re-emergence, Lennon was shot to death by a onetime Beatles fan outside his New York City apartment.
Years after John Lennon’s death, the Beatles released two new songs Free As A Bird and Real Love. Both of these songs were originally conceived13 by John Lennon in the 1970s. Paul McCartney, Ringo and George, finished the songs. Using Lennon’s voice from his original demo14 tapes, the Beatles were together again in the songs then.

  Let It Be随它去

When I find myself in times of trouble,
  Mother Mary comes to me,
  Speaking words of wisdom,
  Let it be...
And in my hour of darkness,
She is standing right in front of me,
  Speaking words of wisdom,
  Let it be...
  Let it be,
  Let it be,
  Let it be,
  Let it be,
  Whisper words of wisdom,
  Let it be...
