Recent research shows that with the stagnation of global fishing production and the continued increase of the world’s population, world fish and shellfish production will have to increase by 133% between 2010 and 2050 in order to meet the projected global demand for aquatic products. The study also pointed out that although the environmental impact of aquaculture activities will increase with the increase of aquaculture output, many measures can be taken to minimize the impacts and encourage the sustainable development of aquaculture. The study was jointly conducted by the World Resources Institute, the World Fisheries Research Organization, the World Bank, the French Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Thai Agricultural University.
