Summer is the highlight of the year; a time of growth and celebration. Natural forces are at their peak, and change happens quickly. Across the continent, it’s a time of great activity. Animal numbers are on the increase as the race to breed is run to the full.
The heat is one characteristic of the Schwabien Alb and the 1)peregrine falcon is another. It is the held bird. Peregrine falcons are fast and 2)agile hunters and they hunt other birds. Fully 3)fledged chicks 4)squawk impatiently for food, but the parent birds no longer feed them. Instead, they encourage them to leave. The first just about makes it, 5)taking out one of its parents with the landing. The next starts out well and joins the group, but is equally unpracticed in landing, but at least finds somewhere soft to come to rest. The parents don’t give up, using a dead pigeon to 6)lure the last chick away from the nest. Finally, hunger wins over the fear of flying. The prey is carved up, but the crashed bird has not yet made it to the 7)ledge. He’s back in the open, but still needs encouragement to try a second flight. A clumsy start will soon be an 8)aerial master. Soon they’ll be strong and agile enough to9)scour the Alb for territories of their own. Perhaps they will even leave the 10)limestone highlands to head off across the continent.
The endless hot days trigger the arrival of the long awaited summer rain, its heavy drops bring 11)refreshment to the dry land. The ocean of flowers is an 12)irresistible feast for millions of tiny, 13)nectar- drinking voyagers. For many flowers and insects that have lain14)dormant through the harsh winter, this is the busiest time of the year.
A flower meadow might look like an 15)idyllic place, but it is a 16)hive of activity fueled by the ceaseless drive to collect food. The colourful carpet on display for armies of insects serves only one purpose: 17)pollination.
In late summer, the 18)grazing19)heath presents its purple20)splendour as 21)heather is in full bloom. Without sheep, this landscape wouldn’t exist. They keep down the plant growth, allowing the heather to grow in open spaces. This is the foundation for bee farms. In August, bee hives in the heath are extremely busy. Worker bees work overtime to gather their winter supplies. There’s even a traffic jam at the entrance.
As the summer draws to an end it explodes in one last sea of flowers. Great22)swathes of red appear as the 23)poppy fields 24)proliferate. For farmers that have held out for developing crops, it’s time for the last 25)arable fields to be harvested. Now the energy of summer starts a transition to the short autumn.
