The partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood is an important test indicator for evaluating the condition of many acute and hospitalized patients. The current test of this indicator is to take arterial blood samples and then perform manual or automatic analysis in clinical laboratories (using Clark electrodes). Unfortunately, this single sample analysis method is expensive and does not provide real-time information in a dynamically changing clinical setting. This paper studies a new type of fiber optic oxygen sensor that can be applied to clinic. The sensor’s indicator can become readily absorbed after a brief UV stimulus and then return to a clear state. The rate at which the indicator returns to the transparent state is proportional to the local oxygen concentration. A red light-emitting diode can be used for the absorption performance of the indicator
