Some chemical mortars are only used for the repair of fine cracks by virtue of their water-like viscosity. However, the most commonly used chemicals in mortars and silicates may not be safe for the environment. For this reason, Federal Germany has banned the use of silicate mortars because it pollutes groundwater. Therefore, experts are developing cement pastes with extremely low viscosity to replace chemical mortars. Soletanche SA, a company based in Natur, France, is using an in-situ process that reduces cement particles in mortar from 120 to 10 microns.
