In order to improve the teaching and learning level of junior high school in Beijing as a whole, improve the relatively weak junior middle school and ease the school choice fever, in 2005 the Beijing Municipal People’s Government and Beijing Municipal Commission of Education launched the “Junior High School Construction Project in Beijing”. This is a major basic education improvement project under the direction of the Beijing Municipal Government and commanded by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission. It adopts an appropriate funding policy to favor schools with difficult conditions for running schools and strives to achieve a balanced basic education with an initial plan of three to five years. In addition to fully training all junior high school teachers, the project also selected 32 schools that are relatively more difficult to run for education and gave priority support. Beijing Normal University Institute of Education participated in the project, 16 teachers and 16 PhD students and some master students formed a project team responsible for providing professional support to 16 of them. In this issue, a series of articles compiled by some of the project team members reflect the research and practice carried out by the project team in the project schools and the preliminary changes brought to the project schools by the project team to readers.
