When people asked me to talk about the architecture of China, about its past and future, my reply was: It is both philosophical and realist. First, my architectural concept is to first consider the concern for humanism and then adopt a form influenced by unique culture and historical context. Secondly, the aspect of pragmatism in my reply is caused by a fact that our company has designed a very important project in the center of Shanghai, and this project is a reflection of our insights into Chinese architecture. The design of a building is in fact a reflection of a unique natural and cultural characteristic - that is, the nature of a certain region. Every country, every city, is unique. Designing in Shanghai, China, is a challenge. Because we discovered that its history is so amazing, its cultural people are so colorful. At the same time, Shanghai is rapidly evolving into a modern city. In order to make buildings in China meaningful, we must face the past, recognize the reality, and fully realize the future.
