The presidential election held by the Kuomintang in 1948 caused great confusion. In response, some scholars pointed out that there is absolutely no need for China to engage in western-style elections because the system of imperial examination in China since the Sui and Tang Dynasties was a Chinese-style representative system, except that it was expressed differently from the West. Most scholars think that the imperial examination system is a system used by the feudal authoritarian monarchy to select bureaucrats, which is incompatible with the “representative system”. The essence of the thought of “Chinese representative system” is the reflection of the traditional intentional cognitive style in the late Qing Dynasty and the “Western Learning Theory”, with obvious “speculation” and “imagination” color.
