近年来,国际上能源问题日趋紧张,特别是有些国家把煤和矿物油用作化学工业原料以后,能源问题更加突出.随之而来的是用于农业生产的化肥成本提高,出售价格上涨.因此,生物固氮的研究和在农牧业生产中的利用问题,越来越引起人们重视.菌、藻等低等植物,具有固氮活性的类型很多,它们具有繁殖速度快,固氮能力强的优点,而且普遍存在于自然界中,如果能很好的利用,必可为农作物提供大量的优质廉价的氮源和畜牧业的优质饲料.最近菲律宾国际水稻研究所连续两年召开了“氮与水稻”的讨论会,肯定了红萍的固氮作用和利用价值.现在美洲、亚洲,不论热带、温带都已开始把红萍当作水稻田的主要氮源.
