象牙凉席,被称为最奢侈的卧具。象牙席的编制最早出现在汉代,《魏书》中就有“务献七宝床、象牙席”的记载。到了清代,象牙席成为历代皇帝所喜爱的生活用品。雍正皇帝在位时,清宫内务府造办处,共制作了5件象牙席供其享用。由于象牙席用料讲究,制作艰难,耗资巨大,雍正皇帝谕令禁止再造。但是乾隆皇帝即位后,广东地方官员仍向清廷进贡象牙席,所用象牙多来自越南、缅甸等东南亚国
