As a poetic tendency, the self-concern of Sexton’s poetic poem can be regarded as the modern return of romanticism in the 19th century. The romanticism here is mainly confined to the poetic influence of Walt Whitman. In this regard, the paper elaborates two levels of questions: first, Sexton’s inheritance of Whitman ’s Self-Taoism is mainly reflected in the confession of poetic expression of “experiential self ” The second is that Sexton further promoted the poetic spirit, paid more attention to the vocabulary of modernity while highlighting his poignant and fragile self-image. In addition, this article also tries to find out the main reasons why Sexton presents morbid self and its pain, indignation and other emotions. In short, it is under the influence of Whitman’s self-poetics that Sexton has established its unique poetic city-state.
