In 1991, the United States Santa Fe Railway ordered 90 new 4,000-horsepower (2984kW) electric drive diesel locomotives from GE Company, of which 67 were six-axis Dash8-40CW models and the other 23 were Dash8-40BW models. This is the second largest locomotive order that the railway company built in 124 years. To date, GE has completed the delivery of 50 locomotives, which are all ordered by 23 four-axis locomotives plus 27 six-axle locomotives. The remaining 40 six-axle locomotives are scheduled to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 1992.
