蕅益大师生活的时代,不仅社会动荡,人心惟危,而且禅道中衰,他自感肩负救世与救教的双重使命,于是他作《论语点睛》,一方面,通过对《论语》的重新解读,把佛教需要的东西贴上孔圣人的标签,把孔子说成是佛教教主。于是原先“弘我王化”的孔圣人,就成为佛的化身。另一方面,他借用佛教的心性论、工夫论以及境界论、死生观对《论语》进行了创造性阐释,佛化了儒家思想。这些具有“前瞻性”的做法,不仅使《论语点睛》成为援佛释《论》的代表作,而且拓展了儒家的内圣学,对当代文化软实力建设也有一定的借鉴意义。
