慈孝规定了父母子女关系,慈孝也可以用爱敬来表现。霞谷的慈孝,即爱敬思想,和作为理论基础的阳明学并非无关。从孝在本来性良知的根源上和知行合一的观点上强调实践的这一点来看,即是如此。因为良知的发现,必然伴随着实践,没有实践的慈孝是没有任何意义的。霞谷以此为基础的人际关系论,对今天的我们也具有很大的启示作用。在困难环境中呈现出来的霞谷“推己及人”的关让精神为我们展示了什么才是正确的人际关系。关让精神的另一面是诚实和真实性。这是人类作为道德生活的主体进行自我省察和自我克服的一个过程,也是追求自我实现的思想家为了实现真正生活目的进行的实践性行为。这也是以追求实学的真实性和实践性为目标的。实忠、实孝、实致、格物等没有任何修饰的实心实学正是霞谷所追求的学习和生活。最后是关于霞谷的子女教育观。从现代的观点来看,霞谷的子女观批判性的要素比肯定性的要素要更多一些。因为它反映了身份社会的差别性。在男女差别和身份差别性的要素上,霞谷比任何思想家都要保守和顽固。这也是霞谷思想的局限性所在。
