Being one type of concrete poetry, visual poetry is featured by its predominant optic salience. This paper intends to analyze the functions of visual poetry based on Roman Jakobson’s model on functions of verbal communication. It is argued that poetic function is still the fundamental function of visual poems which see projection theory extended to a larger scale of semiotics. In addition, two secondary functions are identified: referential function, realized through its textual iconicity either to the object or to the context, and conative function, realized by its openness to readers’ interpretations.
