前不久,《南国红豆》发表了一篇文章,提出一种新观点。认为对于戏曲来说,“内容(故事)在整个戏中所占的份量并不具有决定形式(歌舞)的主导作用。相反,是形式(歌舞)的作用更大,内容(故事)只是歌舞赖以充分表现的辅助手段,不是故事决定歌舞,而是歌舞在选择故事。”后一句话虽然说得有点拐弯,但上文已用括号注明内容即故事,形式即歌舞。故此原意实是:对于戏曲来说,不是内容决定形式,而是形式决定内容。根据什么得出这样的结论呢?原来是由于“最近广州市粤剧一团演出新戏《王子与蛇仙》出乎意料之外地受到观众欢迎”,作者是有感而发:
