排辟异端本是孟子在唐宋能够成功升格的重要原因,但鲜被注意的是,李觏曾因排佛而非孟。李觏的非孟言论集中在其《常语》之中,而撰作《常语》之前,李觏对孟子其实颇为推崇,这是因为李觏早年对孟子的理解在于其精于治道和排辟异端。李觏对孟子态度的逆转,应是受到阻遏古文运动排佛攻势的僧人释契嵩援引孟子以攻击韩愈、甚至进而消解孔子和儒经神圣性的刺激。此外,由于佛学与性命之学的紧密关系,以及孟子在性命之学上的巨大诠释潜能,既改变了李觏对孟子的理解,也让一贯排佛且不喜性命之学的李觏逐渐对孟子生出反感。
