青少年时期一定要重视力量训练。美国教练员迈克尔·塔卡希指出,在刘易斯的辉煌时期,之所以能够取得优异成绩,关键因素并不是力量,而是速度。当刘易斯的速度进入自然衰退期之后,无论多高的力量训练负荷,也未能使他原有的速度水平得以恢复。然而,力量训练对青少年短跑运动员大有益处。他认为,在这个年龄段,力量练习不会对速度产生负影响。因为对短跑运动员来说,最高速度水平要晚于这一时期才会到来。青少年力量训练的合理性直接关系到我国田径运动后备力量的培养和可持续发展问题。正确地进行青少年力量训练必须明确要遵循的训练原则和训练重点。
