It used to be really difficult for women to get a position in the government before. But during the past two years, laws for women protection have improved, allowing women to take part in election and work in the government. Currently, women staff in our government account for 30% of the total. In the meantime, the election law has also changed, enabling young people to have a chance to work in the government, even with privileges and prior positions. That’s why I am able to be a mayor. I was 23 when I took part in the election and another candidate was a 35 year old man. In the final vote, we got a draw of 16 to 16. Because I was younger, I won finally.
We met many difficulties at the beginning as people had some trouble accepting such a young female mayor. I had to prove that I was qualified for the position and able to improve their life, propose aspiring suggestions and create employment opportunities. As a young woman, I faced double challenges yet work harder. Religion, or Muslim culture, is not the obstacle for women to work in the government. Instead, habitual thought is. People with habitual thought are not used to see women working in the decision making position. However, I believe I can change this through my effort.
For those countries where people are still striving for young people and women’s rights, I suggest that they push forward their reform of law, especially election law, which is the guarantee for young people and women to give their voices and take part in the decision making process.
