Recently people have described sugar as the biggest scourge of the world and compared it with the plague. They say sugar causes a variety of illnesses, ranging from obesity to intellectual decline, saying that these deadly diseases, whether babies or centenarians, have no immunity. The U.S. government is convinced of this. In the Senate Election Commission’s 1977 Nutrition and Human Needs report, sugar was termed the scourge. Subsequently, the Federal Trade Agency proposed a ban on advertising of sugar products on children’s television shows (the suggestion was later withdrawn). Some food manufacturers also saw the rudder shout “shrinking sugar production.”
