He Asked Me Out!
Friday, Feb. 2nd
Yesterday my friend and I were walking in the hall on our way to math class when I heard someone calling my name. I immediately turned around and saw ①the object of my fantasies, Jeff, waving to me!
I was so excited that I practically wanted to ②jump out of my skin, but I ③played it cool and waved back. He 1)motioned for me to come over. I took a step but I 2)tripped on my shoelace and ④fell flat on my face! Everybody started laughing, and I didn’t want to look stupid, so I pretended I was hurt until he came over and helped me up.
⑤Later that day Jeff asked me out! I’m sure my eyes 3)lit up like stars. ⑥I’vqe had crushes on boys before, but this was different. With the guys before, it had all been secret and one-way. I liked them from afar. I never ⑦let anything on. I would have been 4)mortified had they known.
But with Jeff it felt different than any of those crushes. It felt more real. I didn’t think of it as a crush. When I was with Jeff, I didn’t feel awkward or 5)tongue-tied like I usually do around guys I like. ⑧I was a bit of a late bloomer.
Smart Sentences
① the object of my fantasies
The film is more fantasy than reality. 词组 the object of one’s fantasy可指事情,如:my fantasy of touring space ;也可指幻想里的人,如本文中的用法,不过,指人的时候通常与男女关系有关。
② jump out of my skin
词组中的jump也可改为leap或fly,即leap/fly out of one’s skin。
③ played it cool
④ fell flat on my face
Running on the wet floor, Amy fell flat on her face.
⑤ Later that day Jeff asked me out!
如:John asked Nancy out Saturday night. 男女一起out就是约会的意思,是out on a date的简单说法。
⑥ I’vqe had crushes on boys before.
crush表示对某人有种说不出的爱慕情怀 (have unspoken amorous feelings for someone)。 I’vqe had a crush on Sally since she won the speech contest last June.
⑦ let anything on
I was feeling devastated tonight, but didn’t let on at the party.
⑧ I was a bit of a late bloomer.
Some youngsters are late bloomers.
