I used to watch her from my kitchen window. She seemed so small as she muscled her way through the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would often watch the kids as they played during break. I remember the first day I saw her playing basketball. I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids. She managed to shoot jump shots just over their heads and into the net. The boys always tried to stop her but no one could. I began to notice her at other times, basketball in hand, playing alone.
One day I asked her why she practiced so much. Without a moment of hesitation she said, “I want to go to college. The only way I can go is to get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball. I want to be the best. My Daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.” Well, I had to give it to her—she was determined. I watched her through those junior high years and into high school. Every week, she led her school team to victory.
One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head in her arms. I walked across the street and sat down in the cool grass beside her. Quietly I asked what was wrong. “Oh, nothing,” came a soft reply, “I am just too short.” The coach told her that at 5’5”(5英尺5英寸) she would probably never get to play for a top ranked team—much less offered a scholarship—so she should stop dreaming about college. She was heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten as I sensed her disappointment. I asked her if she had talked to her dad about it yet. She told me that her father said those coaches were wrong. They just did not understand the power of a dream. He told her that if she truly wanted a scholarship and that nothing could stop her except one thing—her own attitude.
The next year, as she and her team went to the Northern California Championship game, she was offered a scholarship and on the college team. She was going to get the college education that she had dreamed of.

A. She wouldn’t be admitted by an ideal college.
B. Her coach stopped her training because of her height.

2. We can learn from the passage that.
A. her family wouldn’t like to pay her college fee
B. her father forced her to play basketball in collage
C. being a top basketball player can win you a scholarship for college
D. she wouldn’t like to turn to his father for help when in difficulty
3. Which word can best describe her father?
A. Encouraging.B. Optimistic.
C. Stubborn.D. Cruel.
4. Which proverb best matches the story?

D. Pride comes before a fall.

When it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness, who possess wings of their own and who will fly with me. I seek friends whose qualities illuminate (照亮) me and train me up for love. It is for these people that I reserve the glowing hours, too good not to share.
When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and “too serious” about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say: “Let’s start with a train whistle today.” We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changing into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped.
When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend. He was in despair (失望) and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We gave London to each other.
For almost four years I have had remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way, in the other’s dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind. In my most interesting moments, I often think: “Yes, I must tell….” We have never met.
It is such comforting companions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist (心理学家), who will only fill up the healing (愈合的) silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.
5. In Paragraph 3, “We gave London to each other” probably means.
A. our exploration of London was a memorable gift to both of us
B. we were unwilling to tear ourselves away from London
C. our unpleasant feeling about London disappeared
D. we parted with each other in London
6. In the darkest moments, the author would prefer to.
A. seek professional help
B. be left alone
C. stay with her best friend
D. break the silence
7. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Unforgettable Experiences
B. Remarkable Imagination
C. Lifelong Friendship
D. Noble Companions

For most Chinese university students, the US is a favorite destination for further education. But apart from obstacles such as the GRE and TOEFL exams, choosing a good graduate school is no easy task.
Admission is very competitive for international students, so it is important to apply to a number of institutions to have a reasonable chance of acceptance.
Since the application to most universities requires a certain fee, Chinese students usually choose seven to seventeen universities according to their own financial circumstances.
Wang Yuwei, a Zhejiang University graduate, sent applications to 15 US universities.
When the 24-year-old began looking for a US graduate school in her senior year, she took time to compare the various schools and find the ones most suiting her needs. Now, studying at the University of Washington, she knows that her hard work paid off.
“To broaden your chances, at least one third of the applications should be to less selective schools,” said Wang.“Applicants shouldn’t limit their choices to the most famous institutions.”
Furthermore, one shouldn’t rely too much on college rankings such as the Gorman Report or US News & World Report’s annual league tables.
The right school is the one that best meets your own personal needs and interests, rather than someone else’s assessment of an institution’s prestige (声望).
“Usually choices are based on one’s personal interests and academic background, but it is important to make sure that your chosen subject is satisfied,” said Wang.
8. The author believes that the right school is the one that.
A. has the best location
B. best meets one’s own personal needs and interests
C. best meets one’s assessment of an institution’s prestige
D. offers good living conditions
9. According to this passage, what can we judge?
A. More and more students will go abroad for their further education.
B. Choosing a good graduate school is a piece of cake.
C. To go abroad for further education, you must pass the GRE or TOTEL.
D. To get a better chance to go abroad, you’d better apply to a less selective school.
10. What will be continued after this passage?
A. How hard Chinese students studied in America.
B. Some advice on how to take care of yourself in America.
C. The difficulties you will meet with while living in America.
D. Some other things to consider to choose the right school.

A particular quirk (古怪举动) of Canadian education is that there isn’t one system but 13. All 10 provinces and all 3 territories have the right to run their own education systems. It’s established in the Constitution.
This means there is no national standard. Nobody agrees on the grade at which one makes the transition from elementary to secondary school, nor on how many years’ schooling is compulsory, nor how many grades there should be before college or university, nor how schools should be funded. Families relocating often get a surprise when they are informed that the children will have to repeat a grade because the one they have just finished does not cover the required courses to pass into the next grade where they are now.
Older children from isolated areas may be sent away to boarding schools, but this practice is falling out of favor. These days children in a very small community are more likely to attend the same school from kindergarten to grade 12 (13 in Ontario, 11 in Quebec). In rural areas, pupils are taken to the nearest school in large yellow buses, some spending over an hour on the bus each way. Some never do a spot of homework at home because they always complete it on the bus. With the arrival of computers, high-quality education has now become possible even in very remote areas. It also enables parents to educate their children at home.
Colleges in Canada are sponsored by the state. Fully 75% of Canadian students go on after high school to some sort of further education. Having a university degree is fast becoming the minimum standard for employment but is far from a guarantee of a good job; those with a PhD in Philosophy, if not holding tenure (任职) at a university, are likely to be flipping burgers at a fast-food joint.

Dear fellow students,
It is reported that the government is to carry out a project to restore the Guoqing Temple.
Personally I am much delighted to hear the news. I am very proud that we have such an ancient temple in our city. Dating back to the 1820s, the temple can tell us a lot about the history of our home town. Local people used to come to the temple to pray for a good harvest and today it has become a tourist attraction, receiving about 40,000 visitors every year.
As a student, I also hope to contribute to the restoration work. I suggest that complete and professional restoration work should be undertaken in an organized way. Since the best form of conservation is the prevention of damage, the local government should also educate people about how to avoid damaging the important historic buildings in the temple. Last but not the least; the government should take effective measures to control air pollution because the acid rain is greatly harmful to the ancient trees and buildings.

七、One possible version:
Thank you!(155 words)
