It’s reported that Peru’s famed “Ice Maiden”, the frozen mummy of an Inca girl sacrificed1 to the gods 500 years ago, might be at risk from humidity. Dampness was detected inside the mummy’s glass-enclosed refrigeration compartment by an expert from the U.S. Smithsonian Institution who was vacationing in the southern Andean city of Arequipa, where the mummy is kept. The unnamed expert notified Peruvian authorities that the mummy could deteriorate2 beyond repair within five years if the problem is not corrected.
In 1995, The Mountain Institute expedition, led by anthropologist3 Dr Johan Reinhart, set out to climb Mount Ampato, Peru, in search of sacred sites. They thought they saw a backpack, but it turned out to be a small body wrapped up in cloth. The Ice Maiden was 12 to 14 years old and was sacrificed to the mountain gods. Tied to Reinhart’s backpack, she made her trip down the mountain. She weighed about 80 pounds because her flesh was frozen and attached4 to her bones, not dried out. They kept her well wrapped and made a quick trip to the freezer at Catholic University in Arequipa.
The Ice Maiden was thought to be the best-preserved Inca mummy in the world until 1999, when three frozen other mummies were discovered by another Reinhard-led team at the top of a mountain in Argentina. Those were so well-preserved they still had blood in their hearts and lungs, unlike the Ice Maiden.
