Dakota Fanning: Hollywood's Little A-List Star
aving been in over a dozen films and having received so much attention in her young life, Dakota Fanning is still just a regular 12-year-old girl who plays with dolls and enjoys the same things other 12-year-olds enjoy. As she sits on the couch eager to discuss her latest film, it’s difficult to think of this little girl as a big box-office star. She doesn’t 1)put on airs or take herself too seriously. She is just a regular girl - that is until she gets on set. It is then when she amazes everyone, even her co-stars with her acting ability and 2)professionalism.
Although she has worked with some of the biggest A-list actors in Hollywood, such as Sean Penn, Reese Witherspoon, Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise, this young girl is still 3)unfazed by her success. She just hangs out with her friends when she’s not in school. She’s also very 4)animated, she gestures with her hands, she 5)twirls her hair with her fingers, she 6)squishes her shoulders together and 7)leans forward, and she is always smiling and laughing. She shares that gift with everyone she works with.
Fanning is wise beyond her years. Perhaps it is part of her personality, or perhaps it is because she has been in a business that 8)catapulted her into the public’s attention at an early age. In any case, she 9)envisions herself as an actress for years to come. “I felt I’d be missing out if I wasn’t acting,” Fanning said. She loves how movies allow her to experience things she wouldn’t encounter in her everyday life. “You have different people around you. You hear things different. You live differently. I think if [movies] were all the same it wouldn’t be fun doing acting, because it would just be your same life,” she said. “I want to do this forever.”
In Hollywood, actors get cast for one of two reasons. Either their performance will make the film better, or their presence in the credits helps sell tickets. 10)Paul Giamatti is in the former category, Jennifer Lopez in the latter, and Tom Hanks is in both. It’s been a while since there’s been a child actor whose name alone can 11)put bums on seats. Macaulay Culkin at the height of his Home Alone fame was such a figure. With Fanning, it’s different. Her presence didn’t make Man on Fire or her comedy Uptown Girls any easier to market, she won on the basis of her acting ability.
As far as any advice she can give to other young kids wanting to follow her footsteps, she 12)profoundly says, “I think it’s just all about you having a lot of fun and following your dreams for what you really want to do.”
