The Oxen
Christmas Eve, and twelve of the clock.
“Now they are all on their knees,”An elder said as we sat in a flock[群]
By the embers[灰烬] in hearthside[炉边] ease.
We pictured the meek[温顺的] mild creatures where
They dwelt in[居住] their strawy pen[围圈],
Nor did it occur to one of us there
To doubt they were kneeling then.
So fair a fancy few would weave[编织]
In these years! Yet, I feel,
If someone said on Christmas Eve,
“Come; see the oxen kneel,
“In the lonely barton[农家的庭院] by yonder[那边的] coomb[峡谷]
Our childhood used to know,”I should go with him in the gloom[
Hoping it might be so.
