1980 Chaussy successfully developed a new method of nondestructive, non-contact crushing of kidney stones “extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.” The initial report of 72 cases, the success rate of 90% or more. The therapy, which was generally noted and commended by participants at the 19th International Urological Conference in September 1982, was hailed as a major breakthrough in urology.
