I Was Not Prepared at All
Today we’re going back to December, 1999, and the birth of a global television phenomenon.
I’ve been speaking to the young Dutchman who won the very first Big Brother contest. The show has been a huge hit. Everyone is delighted. Bart has just won more than $130,000 in prize money, and is an overnight star.
The show had seemed like a crazy idea. Take a group of complete strangers, lock them away in a purpose-built house cut off from the outside world, and then film how they interact. The winner would be the one who survived 1)periodic 2)evictions, nominated by the other contestants, and voted on by the audience. Bart had just come out of the army when he applied to take part.
Bart (Winner): The show was gonna to last a hundred days, which was about the same time length as…as the mission that I…I did in Bosnia, which was desperately boring, so I thought I could cope with that, handle that.
The basic rules he and the other successful applicants were told were simple. No bullying, no violence, interact with each other, and always keep your microphone switched on. In the end, it was probably Bart’s night of passion that won him the contest. It certainly helped boost the program’s TV ratings, and meant that 3)Endomal could sell the Big Brother franchise around the globe. But winning was to prove a mixed blessing for the 22-year-old.
Bart: I was not prepared at all to be followed and 4)stalked, and by thousands and thousands of people. I just couldn’t walk into a street anymore. People would just run out of their houses with their cameras, and surround me and mob me and not let me go again.
Q: You must have quite liked it a little bit though, Bart.
Bart: There are moments that you are in different situations that make things actually more bearable, but I always felt like an odd one out. I have no tricks that I can do that would, in another society, make me famous. I always felt like the 5)oddball. Like, I have done nothing to deserve this kind of attention, and that’s always been 6)nagging me.
7)Hounded by the press and the public, Bart had several nervous breakdowns. His winnings soon ran out. Bart once told a newspaper that Big Brother had ruined his life. Does he still say that? Bart: I was at a mental low. It was not a…not a physical low and not a financial low, but I was definitely at a mental low. I was 8)arrogant, I had no regard for other people’s feelings, just my own. I didn’t really know how to cope with all the other people. I didn’t like it, on one hand, and on the other hand, there was a lot of money to be made that I felt kind of guilty about taking, so I was kind of unstable, because then there were peaks and then there were lows. And I suppose now I’m quite a stable person, I suppose. Yeah. Actually have regards for other people and…and for their feelings and try to make the best out of every situation, not just for myself, but for other people as well.
Bart has done a variety of jobs over the past few years. In his spare time, he says he likes to read or take long walks in the countryside. Big Brother, the program that he helped to launch, is now shown in more than 40 countries around the world.

Big Brother
