Currently, there is no standard for intercommunication on the Internet. However, this has not stopped the market development of new products in this field. Manufacturers have organized market alliances to promote the development of traditional telephony to Internet telephony. The upcoming standard will make the job easier. As network service providers increase the delivery of voice information over data networks, the need to develop standards becomes more apparent. Some companies are already embarking on pilot projects to provide on-call services on their intranet. Although not as fast as the market is growing, work is under way to establish a strict standard on the Internet that delivers the sound signal. Standards in this area will result from some of the arguments made at the Internet Protocol Forum later this month. There will also be business allies selling their talk products for the Internet at this forum. Business Alliance plans to cater to the possible arguments and needs that will be presented at the web exhibition to be held in Boston on September 22. These standards are intended to enable Internet-based telephone communications to catch up with the traditional telephone network, the well-known public switched telephone network, in terms of quality and ease of use. Here ZD Labs investigates some of the challenging technical issues facing this changing market.
