盐与豉在古代是形影不离的,这两字常常连用:在汉代的《急就篇》上即有“芜荑盐豉”。说到这两者的关系之密切,可从《齐东野语》上看出:宋代有位从江西来的读书人,自认为什么都懂。一天,他要见诗人杨万里,杨万里得知他来自江西,便问他是否带来了“配盐幽菽”,有的话能否送一点。读书人不知“配盐幽菽”为何物,诗人拿过一本字书,翻至“豉”字,注释为“配盐幽菽”,“菽”是豆的古称,“幽”为密封之意,“配盐幽菽”即将豆子蒸熟,加盐等调料,放在密封的缸里,使其生霉,变成豆豉。

The scholar I do not know why “with salt you”, the poet took a book, turned to the word “豉”, annotated as “with salt You 菽”, “菽” is the ancient name of beans, “You” is sealed meaning , “Salt with salt You” is about to steamed beans, salt and other spices, on the sealed cylinder, so that moldy, into bean curd.
