Objective: To observe the differences of the cross-sectional area of paravertebral muscles between the convex and concave side of patients with idiopathic scoliosis (IS), and to explore the relationship between paravertebral muscle and scoliosis. Methods: 31 patients with IS, 20 males and 11 females, aged 12 to 18 years old with Cobb angle ranging from 28 ° to 76 ° with an average of 53 ° ± 12 °. Spinal bilateral paraspinal muscle cross-sectional area. Twenty patients with non-spinal deformity at the same age (control group), 8 women and 12 men, aged 5-15 years. The cross-sectional area of bilateral paravertebral muscles of T8 and T10 were measured on CT images. The cross-sectional area of bilateral paraspinal muscles was compared between the two groups. Results: The cross-sectional area of the paravertebral muscles on the convex side of the superior vertebra, the apical vertebra and the inferior vertebra in IS patients were significantly larger than that of the concave side (P <0.05). The ratio of the cross-sectional area of the paravertebral muscles in the convex / The ratio of the cross-sectional area of the paravertebral muscles at the level of the vertebral vertebra to the level of the vertebral vertebra> 50 ° and <50 ° was not statistically significant (P> 0.05) The paraspinal muscle cross-sectional area ratio had no significant correlation with Cobb angle. There were no significant differences in the cross-sectional area of bilateral paraspinal muscles in the control group (P> 0.05), nor did the cross-sectional area ratio of the paraspinal muscles in the left and right sides (P> 0.05). Conclusions: The bilateral paravertebral muscles of idiopathic scoliosis patients have asymmetric development, the cross-sectional area of the paravertebral muscles on the convex side is larger than the concave side, and the difference between the vertebrae and vertebrae is greatest. However, Concave side ratio and Cobb angle no significant correlation.
