2008年5月12日14时28分,一场突如其来的里氏8.0级强烈地震袭击四川汶川,四川、甘肃、陕西、重庆、云南、山西、贵州、湖北8省市不同程度受灾。灾情震惊全国。国务院总理温家宝在结束对河南考察赶往中南海的途中获悉灾情,第一时间赶赴现场。汶川地震是新中国成立以来破坏性最强、波及范围最大的一次地震。电力中断!通讯中断!交通受阻15月12日下午4时,国家减灾委紧急启动国家Ⅱ级救灾应急响应,当晚22时15分,根据对灾情的进一步了解,国务院决定紧急启动Ⅰ级救灾应急响应。至此,为应对汶川地震灾情,新中国成立以来第一次启动Ⅰ级救灾响应。截至6月1日12时,四川汶川地震已造成69016人遇难,368545人受伤,失踪18830人。为表达中国各族人民对四川汶川大地震遇难同胞的深切哀悼,5月18日,国务院发布公告,决定2008年5月19日至21日为全国哀悼日。在此期间,全国和各驻外机构下半旗致哀,停止公共娱乐活动,外交部和中国驻外使领馆设立吊唁簿。5月19日14时28分起,全国人民默哀3分钟,汽车、火车、舰船鸣笛,防空警报鸣响。
At 14:28 on May 12, 2008, a sudden magnitude 8.0 Richter earthquake struck Sichuan Wenchuan, Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Chongqing, Yunnan, Shanxi, Guizhou and Hubei provinces to varying degrees. So far, in response to the Wenchuan earthquake disaster, the first time since the founding of New China started the first-class disaster response. As at 12 o’clock on the June 1, the earthquake in Wenchuan, Sichuan Province has caused the death of 60,916 people, 368,545 were injured and 18830 were missing. In an expression of profound condolences to the compatriots of China and other ethnic groups who died on the Wenchuan Earthquake on May 20, the State Council issued a public notice on May 18, 2008, setting the date for May 19 to May 21 as a day of mourning. During this period, the halves of the peninsula flags of all parts of the country and all the agencies of overseas countries mourned and stopped public recreational activities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Embassy in China set up a condolence book. At 14:28 on May 19, the people of the whole country paid a tribute for 3 minutes, and the cars, trains, warships and sirens of the air raid sounded.
