Objective To investigate the relationship between vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression and angiogenesis and biological characteristics of human pancreatic cancer. Methods The expression of VEGF protein and microvessel density (MVD) in 55 human pancreatic cancer tissues were determined by immunohistochemistry and compared with the clinical pathological features. Results The average microvessel density of pancreatic cancer was 54.8±18.6. The positive rate of VEGF expression was 70.9%. In patients with poorly differentiated, lymph node metastasis and stage II-IV, the positive rate of VEGF expression was significantly higher than that of moderately differentiated, no lymph node metastasis and Stage I patients (P < 0.05). Follow-up results showed that the survival time of patients with high VEGF expression was significantly shorter than those with low VEGF expression (P<0.01). Conclusion The expression level of VEGF can reflect the degree of malignancy of pancreatic cancer cells and can be used as an indicator for the differentiation, metastasis and prognosis of pancreatic cancer.
