Resonance column instrumentation is commonly used to measure the shear modulus and damping characteristics of soil at small strain amplitudes. Using such instruments to obtain shear modulus from resonant frequencies requires accurate knowledge of the JA value of torsional moment of mass of the instrument’s top cap. This article describes a new and simple method for determining the JA value of a resonance column using two calibration rods of known geometry. The advantage of this calibration method is the determination of the JA value without the need to know the material properties of the calibration specimen. Although a wide variety of resonant column instruments, but the most commonly used is a base fixed on the rigid foundation, the top cap mass driven by sinusoidal excitation force for twisting movement.
