The British Journal of Cambridge Economics, Issue 2009, Volume 33, published an article co-authored by Oxford University professors John Knight and Linda Yueh, “Cities in China Is labor market fragmented or competitive? ”. The article points out that during the period of urban economic reform, because the urban labor demand has far exceeded the urban labor supply, the rural population is allowed to enter the cities in large quantities to fill the vacancies in urban jobs.
