Roger Federer注1 and Rafael Nadal are building the type of excitement that has the tennis world begging for more. Even though they won’t call it a rivalry[竞争], a Federer-Nadal match up is what the public pays to see.
The French Open is the second of the Grand Slam[大满贯] tournaments on the annual tennis calendar. It is the premier clay court[红土网球场] tennis tournament in the world.
Federer: Extending His Overall Reign
Roger Federer says he hopes to extend his seemingly invincible[无敌的] reign over men’s tennis into 2007.
The 9-times Grand Slam winner was virtually unstoppable in 2006, reaching the final in all but one of the 17 tournaments he contested, winning three of the four Majors.
“I am basically living my dream. I hope I can keep it up,?the 25-year-old Swiss said.
“Winning the French Open will definitely be a dream come true,?he said of the only Grand Slam that has eluded[躲避] him.
“But, on top of the list there is always Wimbledon, and staying No.1 in the world, because these are the ones that changed my life, and made me the player and person I am today.?Federer also stressed the importance of having high-level competition, which can push him to greater glories[荣誉].
“You need the competition. Some get luckier, some get less lucky. But, we have a great set of players at the moment.…like Nadal, Roddick…and new ones coming, like Ljubicic and Davydenko.”
Along with the French Open, Federer has set his eyes on two other crowns in the coming years.
“The Davis Cup will be nice, and the Olympics in 2008 will be a big goal for me, as well. These are the ones I haven’t won yet,”he said.
Nadal: Dominating the Clay Count
It is Rafael Nadal, the tennis prodigy[天才] who has recently dominated the French Open. He is described as the most promising professional tennis player in history. Owning a muscular[强健的] body and a lethal[致命的] left-handed forehand, the young Spaniard[西班牙人] is a force of nature, and has become one of the hottest sports personalities. Barely out of his teens, he has achieved record-breaking results, and is known as the King of Clay.
In 2002, the 15-year-old Nadal won his first ATP注2 match. The next year, he became the second youngest player to be ranked among the world’s top 100 singles players, and finished that year in the top 50.
2005 was Nadal’s breakthrough[突破] year. He entered his first French Open among the favorites. On his 19th birthday he defeated Federer, preventing the Swiss from achieving a career Grand Slam. The fierce[猛烈的] competition between the two continued into 2006. In March 2006, Nadal handed Federer his first loss of the year, at the final in Dubai. The two squared off[摆好战斗姿势] once more in the Rome Masters final. Later on, Nadal defeated Federer again in the French Open final.
As a result, it is not surprising that the 2007 French Open was highly expected. For World No.1 Federer, the French Open is the missing link in a career Grand Slam. For World No.2 Nadal, the task of defending his title, as well as maintaining a dominant winning record against Federer, is enormous[巨大的], something that no other player has accomplished thus far.
